Begin here
Scripture Field Notes is a study companion.
It is designed to sit beside your physical Bible, not replace it. Read the passage first. Use the app for background, context, connections, and questions. Then return to the page and read it again.
Notice the words, structure, repeated ideas, and questions in your own Bible.
Use the app to investigate context, history, language, geography, and biblical connections.
Reread the passage and test what you learned against Scripture before applying or teaching it.
Start in the right place
Three ways to begin.
I have a passage question
Choose Quick Context or Deep Study, select the translation in your Bible, then photograph a verse or type its reference.
Walk through a passage study ↓I want a daily reading path
Build a chronological, topical, or keyword plan for 7, 14, or 30 days.
Learn about daily plans ↓I want to continue my work
Open Study Journey to resume a plan, search saved studies, revisit a passage, review your month, or enter a Study Group.
Understand Study Journey ↓Passage walkthrough
From a page in your Bible to a focused study.
- 1Choose the help you need
Select Quick Context for a short orientation or Deep Study for a fuller investigation.
- 2Select the translation in your Bible
Choose KJV, NKJV, ESV, NLT, CSB, NIV, NASB. NKJV is the default, and you can correct the translation after recognition.
- 3Photograph or type the passage
A close photograph of one verse or a few lines is enough. You can also type a reference when you already know it.
- 4Confirm the match
Compare the proposed reference with your Bible. Choose an alternative, correct it manually, or use the optional cloud photo check when needed.
- 5Narrow the range
If the photograph includes more text than you need, choose the verse or exact range you want to study.
- 6Name your question
Tell Scripture Field Notes what caught your attention or what you do not understand. This keeps the study focused.
- 7Observe before receiving analysis
In a deep study, record what you notice, the questions you have, and your first thoughts before opening the report.
For the clearest photograph
- Hold the phone directly above the text.
- Use bright, even light without glare.
- Move close enough for the words to be sharp.
- Include a verse number when possible.
- Keep fingers, ribbons, and page edges away from the words.
The standard reader works on your device. Retake the picture, type the reference, choose a suggested match, or use the clearly labeled cloud photo check for extra help.
Choose a study path
Use the right amount of help.
Quick Context
Use this when a verse is confusing and you need enough background to keep reading.
- What is happening
- Immediate literary context
- Historical background
- Details worth noticing
- Helpful cross-references
Deep Study
Use this when preparing, teaching, discussing, or spending extended time in a passage.
- Literary, historical, and theological context
- Geography and original-language word studies
- Cross-references and discussion questions
- Sources, confidence labels, and limitations
- Reflection, application, and follow-up tools
Whole-Bible Theme Study
Use this when you want to identify a chapter’s main idea and trace it throughout Scripture.
- Chapter and book context
- Several proposed themes to review
- Canonical development
- Key passages with connection types
- Alternative readings and cautions
A Quick Context report can be expanded into a Deep Study without starting over.
Daily Scripture plans
Build a reading path around what you want to learn.
On the home screen, choose a plan type, select 7, 14, or 30 days, and set a starting date. Scripture Field Notes creates one manageable reference and one observation focus for each day.
Chronological
Follow key passages through the Bible’s storyline in historical-story order.
Topical
Enter a subject such as prayer, grace, wisdom, or the kingdom of God and trace its development across Scripture.
Keyword
Enter a word such as hope, rest, or covenant. The plan also accounts for related biblical ideas and translation differences.
- Build the plan on the home screen.
- Select Open plan, or later open Study Journey → Plans.
- Read the day’s passage in your own Bible and use the observation focus.
- Select Study when you want Quick Context or a deeper report for that reading.
- Mark the day complete and continue with the next unfinished passage.
Daily plans provide references and observation prompts, not replacement Bible text. Generated plans should be used with discernment, especially when chronology or the boundaries of a topic are debated.
Use your report
Read actively, not passively.
Keep your Bible open while reading. Follow cross-references in your own Bible, examine the linked sources, and distinguish direct support from interpretation.
What a deep report can include
How the passage functions in its chapter and book.
People, customs, events, and background that clarify the setting.
How the passage contributes to larger biblical themes.
Important places and why they matter.
Original-language insights, translation cautions, and meaning in context.
Related passages with an explanation of the connection.
Relevant links may include Enduring Word, Blue Letter Bible, Hank’s Bible Study, Letters From Home, and research sources.
Discussion prompts plus places where evidence or interpretation is uncertain.
Go deeper after the report
Turn information into attentive study.
Ask a follow-up
Press further into your starting question or ask something new about the passage. Suggested Scripture connections and cautions remain attached to the answer.
Reflection and application
Record what changed in your understanding, the truth you want to carry, your response or next step, and a prayer.
Return to the Bible
Reread the passage and weigh what became clearer instead of ending with the generated report.
Interactive map and timeline
Explore important places, connections, dates, and historical sequence. Confidence and disputed details are labeled.
Translation comparison
Compare meaningful wording and translation decisions across the seven supported study translations without reproducing licensed text.
Evidence view
See which claims are supported, how strong the support is, and which sources are attached.
Personal theme connections
Surface related passages, themes, summaries, and tags from your own saved Study Journey. Private prayer text is not used for matching.
Revisit reminder
Schedule tomorrow, next week, next month, or a custom date so you can return after the study has had time to settle.
Study Journey
Keep a continuing record.
Select Save while recording observations or from a completed report. Open Study Journey at the top of the app whenever you want to continue.
Search saved passages, notes, themes, and tags. Organize studies into collections, add tags, pin important work, and reopen any report.
Start with a passage, keep the app’s research and your own session notes together, then record why you followed a question into another passage. Reopen the whole trail at any time.
Continue generated daily plans, use built-in guided plans, build a custom study series, mark readings complete, and open any passage for study.
Manage revisit reminders and create a monthly “What I’ve been learning” summary. Including personal reflection notes is optional; prayer is excluded.
Create or enter linked Study Groups and return to each group’s shared library and notebook.
At the end of a report, use Study notebook to write your notes. Choose Save to notebook to keep the entry in your Journey. To keep exploring, enter the next passage and what led you there, then choose Continue with this passage. Your personal notebook remains private; sign in to sync saved entries across devices.

- Active drafts stay on the current device; signed-in Journey data is privately synced.

Common questions
When something does not work as expected
The photograph matched the wrong passage.
Check the selected translation, retake a closer and straighter picture, choose an alternative match, use the optional cloud check, or type the reference manually.
I only want to study one verse from the photographed page.
After the passage is identified, use the focus controls to select one suggested verse or enter the exact verse range you want.
Where did my daily plan go?
Open Study Journey and select Plans. Plans remain on the device where you created them unless you are signed in with Google.
The page refreshed while I was studying.
Scripture Field Notes should restore the active draft automatically. Look for the “Draft recovered” notice. Bible photographs are not kept in the recovery draft, so an interrupted scan may need a new photograph.
I cannot see my studies on another device.
Sign in with the same Google account on both devices. Unsaved active drafts stay only on the device where they were created.
Why is a map location, date, or interpretation labeled tentative?
Some historical details and interpretations are debated or based on limited evidence. The label is an invitation to investigate, not a technical error.
Can other people see my notes or prayers?
Not unless you deliberately include them while sharing. Group membership controls access to group libraries, and one-study links show only the material you chose to include.
How do I get back to this guide?
Select Help & Guide at the top of Scripture Field Notes. The guide remains available after the welcome message is dismissed.
